This book is copyrighted 2007 by Marshall Cavendish Corporation. I would rate this book on a scale of one to ten a nine. The reason I give this book a nine is because the author gives lots a of facts and kept me interested. I would read another one of his books.

Events That Shaped My Life

Some risks I had to take was being the first person to reach Mt. Everest's summit. The second person was my friend and buddy who help me achieve my goal. On the way up we both helped each other through out the journey. It took a long time and a lot of hard work. We had 8 camps on the mountain.

Another thing is I had to go up a 40 foot straight up glacier. This was the toughest part to climb on Mt. Everest. I think that inspires young climbers everywhere. Now on the mountain there are ladders and stuff to help you get up the glacier, but I did it all by my self. On the point where I first stepped on the summit they named it the Hillary Step.

special and interesting

Some interesting facts about me are that I traveled half of Antarctica on a tractor! This took a very long time. Also I can survive on the coldest places on Earth.

Character traits

To be the first person to reach Mt. Everest you have to be determined and brave and I was. Some people get half way up and decide that it is not a very big goal to accomplish. Trust me, it wasn't easy. I like to make things look easy but this was hard. I was very intelligent because on the way up the mountain I always checked to make sure Norgay and I would have enough oxygen to get down. That is another example of why you might think I am a nerd.

I was also very giving. I donated money for things certain people need. One example is I donate money to build schools. I think children need to learn no matter how poor or rich they are.

Effect on the world or people

I set a goal to be the first person to ever reach Mt. Everest. The
goal seemed really far set then. Also if I told you that was my goal you would think I was stupid. But that accomplishment has set goals and inspired many people. I also have set another goal that not a lot of people talk about.
It is probally because I am not very popular yet. The goal is I am also the first person to ever set foot on both the North and South Poles. It was very cold but I was used to it because of Everest. Another thing I did was donate money to build schools in places that don't have one.

Backround Information

I, Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919 in Tuakau, New Zealand which was my home town. In social studies you learned about New Zealand but I know that you guys probably didn't learn about this unpopular town. You probably thought that once you knew who I was you thought that I was interested in mountaineering right when I was born but as a young boy I was not even interested in mountaineering. I was actually interested in reading books. No, I am not a nerd. It's just that it was my source of entertainment when I was young.

When I was reading books in bed my sister would pull a string to let me know that my dad was coming and I would put away my book and turn of the light and pretend to go to sleep. It worked out really well. My dad never found out. I still don't know why he doesn't like me to read but he didn't. Another thing you probably thought about me was that I was born big and bulky, but when I was young I was skinny because all I did was read.
